I have started this lecture of mosaic a half of the study year ago. This was one of unique experiences, because I had a possibility to learn a traditional techniques of mosaic from Italian professors. Furthermore, I got a chance to have a practical experience of one of the oldest traditional arts in Italian decoration. During this period I have not only improved my skills in composition but also have enhanced my visual perception of old masterpieces of mosaic. In fact, because of Erasmus period in Accademia di Belle Arti Bologna in Italy I can go and observe a study subject ( the original artwork or masterpiece of mosaic) after the class and analyze it by my own eyes. Because Bologna itself is a historical city with a great heritage, but as well it has a central position in map from which it is really easy to travel to other cities. That is why sometimes I have a feeling that this Erasmus period it is like a walking in a huge museum- every day you notice something new in ancient heritage.
Consequently, when I had a first class of mosaic I was really surprised how similar it was to painting, however the difficulty in matching colors by sorting the tessera - tiles and making shapes with tools: the dependence on size and shape, gave me a new logic thinking in making an image. Virtually, the same techniques can be applied in making installations or 3 dimensional paintings. The space can be used as a board for making an image and the colorful shapes can be used as tiles in space to make a visual effect patterns. Considering all the new ideas and learned skills I understand that I have advanced and made a right choice on choosing this mosaic lecture as it gave me a base for making a modern artwork.
On the other side I have really enjoyed to study mosaic as it took some time to make but it was not difficult. There were any limitation by time or deadlines from professor, so you could relax and dedicate for each art work piece as much time as you want. There were no rush and you could enjoy a group working atmosphere in class: have an easy time with sharing ideas between group-mates. Of course, by the end of semester there was an exam to check your studies. However, just because the class had a calm not stressful presence, it does not mean that you will get a good mark for nothing. By the end of the period I have needed to present 4 images of my mosaic work: present my idea and explain the progress that I made in mosaic technique during my studies, also afterwards there were some theoretical questions. When I had an exam I felt prepared, however I did not expected and overjoyed when I got to know that I have passed and got a top mark 30 /30 . This was a first mark in Accademia di Belle Arti Bologna.
